7 Foods to Boost Your Mood

As we enter the October/November/December months, it’s the perfect time to think about our health and make some eating decisions before the onslaught of tasty treats comes our way!

You know what I mean, right?  October brings Halloween candy into my home.  November brings Thanksgiving and extra eating.  December brings cookies, cakes, potlucks, parties…you get the picture.

When I overeat and choose unhealthy foods, my waistline isn’t the only thing affected.  I’m crankier.  I feel more sluggish.  I am not as productive as I could be.

Let’s choose to fuel our body with something good today.  Here are 7 great foods to boost your mood:

Oatmeal is packed with soluble fiber to lower blood sugar levels and reduce irritability.

Whole Grain Bread contains a wide variety of the amino acids needed to keep your mood upbeat.

Salmon has omega-3 fatty acids which are used by the brain to produce neurotransmitters to stave off depression and repair brain cells needed to boost your mood.

Chicken has a high level of tyrosine, an amino acid that helps elevate levels of norepinephrine and dopamine. These chemicals are involved in the reaction time of your body, the motivation you feel, and possibly depression.

Leafy Greens are an excellent source of folic acid, a lack of which has been linked to depressed mood.

Milk is a great feel good drink because calcium can help reduce your levels of stress and anxiety, and contains tryptophan that helps your body produce serotonin which elevates mood.

Bananas also contain tryptophan, plus they’re packed with potassium and Vitamin B6 to regulate blood sugar and stabilize mood.

Choose foods you like on this list and make them a regular part of your meals and snacks.  And if you want more help on staying healthy, my book 31 Days to Becoming a Happy Mom has a chapter just for you.
