If you have a school-age child or grandchild, I have an amazing ministry to share with you. When Ethan was in first grade, I started attending a Moms in Prayer group. The vision of Moms in Prayer is quite simple and revolutionary: that every school in the world would be covered in prayer.
What it means practically is that you only need to find one other mom in your school who loves Jesus and voila…you can have a Moms in Prayer group covering your school.
Being in a Moms in Prayer group has been the best investment of my time. One hour of prayer each week that school is in session. Believe me, I’m a busy mom and get it. That time commitment may seem overwhelming or you may wonder, “Can I really pray for that long?”
You’ll be pleasantly surprised to know that (1) what you accomplish in that one hour of praying will make your life run much more smoothly in the other 168 hours and (2) praying with others with a Scripture guide and prayer prompts provided by Moms in Prayer makes the time go really fast.
As my kids move through elementary school, I have such confidence that God is with them, protecting them and helping them grow. There are about 6 moms in my group and we’re all in different stages in terms of our experience with prayer. It is so wonderful to learn from one another! One of the moms prays in such faith and when she prays for my child, I KNOW God has heard!
Here’s an example of what would happen at Moms in Prayer. Insert your child’s name and pray it out loud now:
“May _____ (insert child’s name) always be strong and courageous in their character and in their actions.” Deut. 31:6
See how easy that is? See how powerful it is to pray in agreement with God’s Word?
Moms in Prayer provides outlines to guide your prayer time. It’s an easy ministry to start or lead. You can meet in a church, a home, a park, anywhere that you and another mom(s) feel comfortable pouring out your heart before the Lord for your kids.
For more information, visit the Moms in Prayer website and type in your school. Who knows? There may be a Moms in Prayer group already at your school that you can join. Or you can begin praying for one other mom to join you and form a group for your school. Then be sure to register with Moms in Prayer so in the future, other praying moms that you may not even know from your school can find you.
This happened to me recently and blessed me to pieces! A mom of a kindergartner was looking for a Moms in Prayer group and looked up our school. She found our group that way and I met her for the first time! What a joy to pray with my sister in Christ that I might not have met otherwise.
So, before the school year begins again, ask the Lord if Moms in Prayer is supposed to part of your 2014-15 calendar. I promise it is time spent that you will never regret.
Of all the things you can do to prepare your child for school (like buying school supplies, a new top, new sneakers, getting a tutor…), the best thing you can do for your child is to pray.
